This early-blooming deciduous shrub is a part of the rose family, which can be seen through its rose-like flowers and thorns.  Flowering quince can make a great border or hedge with its dark green foliage through the spring and fall.  Classic varieties tend to have larger thorns and can produce berries in the fall, where new varieties such as the double take series are slightly smaller, thornless, and have gorgeous double flowers.
