2021 Workshops & Classes

In compliance with the current COVID regulations and to insure the safety of our patrons, workshops and classes will be held at the outdoor kitchen area unless otherwise indicated, space is limited to 10 attendees, masks are to be worn at all times, and seating or workstations will be 6 feet apart. 

Pre-register online or by phone. Registration closes at noon on the Friday before the class.  A minimum of four attendees are needed for a class to make. In the event that the workshop is cancelled, attendees will be notified via phone or email and registation fees will be refunded.

Starting Seeds Indoors March 6th, 2021 at 10:00 AM

Now is the time to get things started despite the cold weather outside. Bring your garden gloves and join Allyson as she guides you through the basics of getting those seeds growing. You will leave with seeds, soil, and starter ideas. This workshop will meet at the entrance nearest to the indoor cash register and walk to one of our upper greenhouses. $5 registration fee due at signup.

Spring Pruning & Fertilizing March 13th, 2021 at 10:00 AM

“Can I ask a question? When should a hydrangea, crape myrtle, rose bush, holly tree, or maple tree be pruned?  And, oh by the way, how should it be done?  And what about fertilization –  now, right?”  Join Sam in this informative class to learn how and when to prune and fertilize different plants in your yard. At the end of the class, we’ll be raffling off a bag of Espoma fertilizer!

Cool Weather Vegetables March 20th, 2021 at 10:00 AM

Yes, it’s time to get those cool weather vegetables in the ground.  Mariah will share her tips and tricks for transplanting seedlings and protecting the tender growth so you can enjoy a fresh, abundant, and delicious harvest. All attendees will receive a 25% off coupon for a Frost Cloth.

Birds in the Garden March 27th, 2021 at 10:00 AM

Join in the conversation on how to attract native birds to your yard.  Sharon will help you develop a better understanding of the role they play in the health of your garden.  Identify common songbirds, raptors, and woodpeckers native to Virginia and consider the various types of seeds and feeders available here at Cross Creek. All attendees leave with a suet block and the chance to win a suet feeder!

Turf April 3rd, 2021 at 9:00 AM

“What exactly is in turf and why do I need it? Do I need to do anything before laying it down? What happens after it is installed? Do I need to fertilize it? How much water do I give turf?” All these questions and more will be addressed in this presentation by Rawlings. For those who purchase a turf maintenance contract with Cross Creek, the first Lime treatment will be free.

Native Trees & Shrubs April 10th, 2021 at 10:00 AM

The starting point of this presentation is identifying native trees and shrubs for this area. While they’re not always the “showy” specimens, native plants are beneficial for your garden. Understanding the pros and cons of planting them is important to the enhancement of your yard; the right trees or shrubs can provide years of satisfaction. Organic Vegetable Gardening April 17th, 2021 at 10:00 AM

Growing organic vegetables might not be nearly as complicated as you think.  You might wonder what exactly does “organic” mean and can it be done in a big pot, or does it have to be in the ground?  Put on your garden gloves and join other like minded gardeners as they explore the details and options of growing organic vegetables. Attendees will receive a bag of Coast of Maine organic soil and a cellpack of veggies. A $10 registration fee is due at the time of registration.

Virginia is home to a number of beautiful native perennials.  While not always as “showy” as non-native perennials, they are often hardier and benefit the local enivronment. Spring Floral Arranging May 1st, 2021 at 10:00 AM

Few things brighten a room like a spring floral arrangement.  Under the guidance of one of our floral designers you can learn how to make a spring arrangement. It’s about color, placement, fillers, height, and a little magic. You will be amazed at your own original floral arrangement and hopefully feel more confident to try it again on your own! A $40 registration fee is due at the time of registration.
